What is it?

Composition

Protopic is based on the active ingredient tacrolimus, which is the basis of its therapeutic action.

• Tacrolimus is the main component, providing local reduction in immune system activity.
• Additional ingredients, such as petrolatum and mineral oil, are used to create the ointments base and facilitate its absorption into the skin.
• The formulation is designed to minimize irritation and dryness, which often accompany atopic dermatitis.

These components work together to provide effective soothing and treatment for skin affected by eczema.

How to use?

Protopic ointment is for external use only. It should not be applied to skin suspected of being cancerous, and should not be taken orally. Follow your doctors instructions for using this medication.

1. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application, unless the ointment is being used on your hands.
2. Apply a thin layer only to the eczema-affected areas of skin and rub in gently.
3. If needed, use a moisturizer after application to prevent excessive dryness. Discuss the appropriate moisturizer with your doctor.
4. Avoid covering the treated skin with bandages unless directed by your doctor.

It is important to avoid contact of the treated skin with water for some time after application to prevent the ointment from washing off.

How does it work?

Protopic acts as an immunomodulator, suppressing immune system activity at the site of application. This is achieved through tacrolimuss inhibitory effect on calcineurin, an enzyme that plays a key role in the activation of certain immune cells. By reducing the activity of these cells, the ointment helps reduce the inflammation and itching characteristic of eczema.

Tacrolimus does not cause skin atrophy, which is common with some other topical steroid-based products. This makes the drug safe for long-term use in patients of all ages, starting from the age of two. Protopics primary action is to reduce the risk of relapses and alleviate symptoms, helping to maintain skin remission.

Indications

Protopic is indicated for specific skin conditions where standard treatments have proven ineffective or undesirable. These conditions include:

• Moderate to severe atopic dermatitis that is refractory to other treatments.
• Chronic eczema in patients over 2 years of age requiring long-term therapy.
• Conditions in which steroids should be avoided.
• Cases in which patients experience serious side effects from other medications.

These indications highlight the importance of Protopic in the combination therapy of complex dermatological conditions.

Contraindications

Despite Protopics effectiveness, its use is not always possible. The drug is contraindicated in the following cases:

• Allergies to tacrolimus or other components of the drug.
• History of skin lesions, such as melanoma.
• Viral or bacterial skin infections, including herpes or chickenpox.
• Netherton syndrome or other genetic skin diseases.
• Weakened immune function due to medical conditions or medications.

All these conditions require special caution and mandatory consultation with a doctor before starting therapy.

Side effects

Protopic can cause a number of side effects, especially at the beginning of use. However, not all patients experience these effects, and most symptoms are temporary.

• Burning, itching, or tingling in the treated areas of the skin.
• Possible development of a viral skin infection.
• Increased skin sensitivity to temperature changes.
• Acne, redness, or crusting around hair follicles.
• Upset stomach, headaches, or muscle pain.
• Cold-like symptoms: runny nose, chills, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.
